About NCBI

National Council for the Blind is Ireland’s national sight loss charity, providing services to over 6,300 people every year.
We offer a range of services to adults and children living with sight loss. These include information and advice which help in many areas of life such as using public transport, cooking and shopping and education. We also provide emotional and practical support through individual and family counselling and other support services.

Other services include providing rehabilitation services, technology assistance, employment support, library facilities and other training.
We work with people across the country to help them live as independent and fulfilling lives as possible.

Protect your Sight

1. Have your eyes checked with your local optometrist every two years.
2. Those who smoke are at a greater risk of developing eye disease. Cut down on your smoking or quit completely if you can.
3. Eat foods like fruits, colourful vegetables and fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
4. Wear sunglasses that have a CE mark.
5. If you’re in front of a screen for most of the day, follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
6. If required, wear protective eyewear in work such as goggles, face shields, safety glasses or full face respirators.
